Your trainers
Meet the licensed trainers and working yards that look after your GoldenBlue horses.

Brian Ellison
Brian Ellison trains dual-purpose runners from Spring Cottage Stables at Norton, near Malton in North Yorkshire. Born in Newcastle in 1952 and one of eight children, he left school at 15 to join Middleham trainer Harry Blackshaw and became a jockey. He took out his training licence in 1989 and saddled his first winner, Corbetts Diamond, at Hexham that year. He bought the yard around 2000 and grew it from around 20 horses to a string of more than 100. He trained his 1,000th winner, Robero, at Newmarket in July 2016. His big-race successes include Moyenne Corniche in the 2011 Ebor at York, Top Notch Tonto, his first Flat Group winner, in 2013, and Marsh Warbler, a Grade One-winning hurdler. In 2024 Onesmoothoperator won the Northumberland Plate, a race he had long wanted to win after being runner-up with Seamour in 2016.

Bryan & Beth Smart
Bryan and Beth Smart train from Hambleton House, on the edge of the North York Moors near Thirsk. Bryan has been licensed for around three decades and trains both on the Flat and over jumps, with around 50 horses in training and room for 75. The yard has its own all-weather and grass gallops, indoor and outdoor schools, and an on-site physiotherapist. The Smarts have a strong record with sharp, speedy horses, especially two-year-olds. Hellvelyn won the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot in 2006, and Boomerang Blade won the valuable St Leger Yearling Stakes at Doncaster in 1998. The yard’s biggest day came in 2018, when Alpha Delphini won the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes at York by the narrowest of margins.

Susan Corbett
Susan Corbett joined the training ranks only 12 years ago after a career in Newspapers and then  breeding horses. She trains in the small village of Otterburn, Northumberland and has a farm which gives the horses plenty of turn out in the summer. Her team is led by her son Jamie who was a jockey before becoming assistant trainer three years ago. The yard give their horses individual attention and have won various accolades over the last few years such as the Lycetts Team Champion award and Trainer Magazine ‘ Trainer of the Quarter’.
Training mainly Jumpers, but the team has also had some notable Flat winners such as Gowanbuster, Clear Angel and now, Freddie Steady Go. The yard stats are very good and the team does well with bargain buy horses, some of which they have bred themselves such as Les’s Legacy, Freddie Steady Go and Dotties Promise.
